Aims
PEN aims to:
-
-Evaluate the current methods for detection and characterisation of pathogenic E. coli, identifying and detailing areas where new technologies are required as a focus for future research and development. Recommendations for the harmonisation of optimal methodologies across different disciplines will be made, consistent with facilitating the protection of public health through rapid detection and/or diagnosis and a direct comparison of research, epidemiological and other investigations throughout Europe and beyond.
-
-Advance our understanding of the epidemiology of pathogenic E. coli through the collation of data on its epidemiology and transmission from around the world.
-
-Provide for a greater understanding of the evolution and emergence of pathogenic E. coli (including potential developments in the future) and provide much needed data in a structured format which will be applicable in the development of future therapeutic strategies and agents.
-
-Provide the fundamental understanding of the ecology of pathogenic E. coli, which will be required to assess the possibilities for controlling these agents at the farm level.
-
-Promote collaboration and sharing of research information both within Europe and also with the USA, Australia, New Zealand and INCO countries (Africa and Latin America) on pathogenic E. coli so we can recognise emergent strains and modes of transmission in a timely manner. Through focused dissemination of this network, the best advice and knowledge on how to control these pathogens will then be provided to the key stakeholders in the environmental and recreational area, farming and food industry, public health and regulatory authorities in an efficient manner to maximise public health protection.
PEN will achieve these aims by holding 5 international conferences over the next 3 years (2007-2009), each one devoted to one of 5 key issues associated with pathogenic E. coli.
